Welcome to the

Canadian Shield

We are now looking at the Hudson's Bay. Just a few short minutes out of Churchill Manitoba, a plane wreck can be seen. Use your mouse to turn around and find the plane which was named, "Miss Piggy".

Planes are often the only way to supply remote locations with food and supplies. The Miss Piggy was in that business. In 1979, soon after taking off, she lost an engine (also probably overloaded) and crashed trying to get back to the airstrip. Somehow the pilot put the plane into a stall just above the ground and it pancaked to the ground - everyone survived. The site is now there for everyone to explore through - however, the tourist site reports that it can be quiet dangerous because polar bears like to sit inside the plane too.

The Canadian Shield’s most notable physical features are thousands of small lakes, thin layers of soil and rolling hills. To read more about the Canadian Shield, click here

We are still in Manitoba, but we've moved toward the middle of the province now. What do you notice about this landscape?

Do you see all these lakes? Do you notice the general shape that they form? You've got it! They outline the Canadian Shield region. It's a horseshoe shape - or a shield that was taken into battle.
